Curb Mount vs Deck Mount Skylights - Toronto Skylight Specialist

Curb Mount Skylight, Toronto Skylight Repair, Moore Skylights Inc.

A curb mounted skylight is as it sounds. It has a structural lumber frame that sits up from the roof 5.5 inches in height.  This wooden frame is the curb and it is sealed to the roof with fasteners, a high grade ice and water membrane, new surrounding shingles, and a VELUX flashing kit. Once the curb is sealed and water tight the VELUX skylight is placed on top of the curb. Next the skylight and the curb are fastened together to make a complete water tight seal. The "curb" is one of the best and most used option for a skylight replacement. A curb mount skylight can be manufactured for custom sizes and can be used in almost all situations of a home. This type of skylight also has bigger condensation gaskets what makes it great for higher condensation areas.

Deck Mount Skylight, Toronto Skylight Repair, Moore Skylights Inc.

A deck mount skylight is usually for a new installation or a replacement of an existing VELUX deck mount skylight. A deck mount skylight has a lower profile to the roof and sticks up about 3.5 inches in height . A deck mount unit has a built in wooden base with the metal frame and glass attached to it. The skylight is then sealed to the roof with fasteners, a high grade ice and water membrane, new surrounding shingles, and a VELUX flashing kit.  In most cases you cannot replace an old curb mount skylight with a new deck mount skylight. This is due to the interior frame of the deck mount unit. There is a built in 1/2 inch drywall channel. If this channel isn't installed properly with drywall or a trim blocking it you will experience condensation issues.
